Cherry’s speech gave additional visibility and momentum to the Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act, which prohibits discrimination based on hair styles and hair texture. Hair Love’s win was a win for Deandre Arnold and his mother. Volumes of crowdfunding donors are credited at the end of the film! That’s so HOT. Hair Love’s success was, and will continue to be, a big win for many, precisely because so many people were involved. I’m inspired by the fact that Cherry claimed his victory : When God gave him the vision, he didn’t wait for the establishment to co-sign his mission! I’m inspired by Cherry’s leadership: He was willing to boldly reach out to his community and crowdfund the project, because the powers that be would not finance it. His project won an Academy Award for best animated short film – a monumental win for many more people than just Cherry and Sony Pictures Animation’s Karen Rupert Toliver. Cherry, a former NFL player who committed himself to football to reach elite athlete status, pivoted and directed a beautiful, deep, six-minute animated film about a father, his little girl, her hair and a family dealing with cancer. It’s also because it’s inspiring to me that Matthew A. Hair Love makes me happy. It’s not just because I'm a stylist and I love hair. Looking around for my happy, I found myself watching Hair Love again.
